Once Upon Another Time: Writing True Fairy Tales // June 2-27
Maybe we don’t believe in magic but something of Red Riding Hood, a bit of Captain Hook, and perhaps a shard of glass from Cinderella’s shoe has stayed with us. We know about walking into woods and facing wolves. We know the struggle in trying to outwit youth (we’re mothers, after all). We certainly know when a shoe doesn’t fit and when - oh, blessed event - it does and somehow we know exactly where we’re going and what we’ll do when we get there.
In this four week course led by Callie Feyen, we will look at the truth in fairy tales and folklore. We will study character, structure, plot, metaphor, and of course, we will write our own, “Once Upon [Another] Time.” Writers will walk away with one polished, true fairy tale.
Course Schedule:
Week 1: Why Fairy Tales?
Week 2: Structure, Plot, Metaphor
Week 3: She-Wolf, She Princess, She-Chicken - seeing ourselves as characters
Week 4: Cinderella Scores a Ticket to the Michigan v OSU football game - putting it all together
The workshop begins at 10am PT // 12pm CT // 1pm ET.
Writers will also need a copy of Beasts and Beauty: Dangerous Tales by Soman Chainani.

Callie Feyen is an Adjunct Professor of Creative Writing, Children's Literature, and English Composition.
