You’ve heard the names: Hermit Crab, Collage, Braided, Flash. But what about Abecedarian, Diptych, Tryptic, or Meditative? Are narrative essays written with beautiful prose lyrical? Is creative nonfiction lyrical by nature? Does knowing what a lyrical essay is and how it works matter as a writer?

Join Sonya to get answers to all these questions while learning about and exploring lyrical essay forms — and then practice writing your own!

This 6 week workshop will be run in two 3-week intervals consisting of two reading weeks and one writing week. Participants will read and discuss essays in weeks 1 and 2 of each interval then spend week 3 writing.

What participants can Expect:

  • To learn what a lyrical essay is and the various forms it comes in

  • Access to a Dropbox link with essays in each form

  • Slack discussion on assigned essays

  • Turn in two essay drafts at the end of each interval for instructor and peer feedback
