March: Sway

My father-in-law was always known for the way he walked. His walk was infamous and, as much as no one wanted to admit it, hereditary. The running joke at every Christmas party and family dinner was looking for evidence of who inherited said walk (which was many). We even coined a term for it: “The Danny Walk.”

“Walk” is really a loose term; “stomp” would probably be more appropriate. You never had to guess where he was in the house, and when he came thundering down the hall, his heels would strike the ground with such force that you’d expect to see a web of cracks in his wake.

This month, pay attention to motion. What subtle movements do you notice in your kids, your spouse, or your best friend that make them uniquely them? How do you feel when you’re in motion? Motion can be thrilling or terrifying, subtle or painfully obvious, annoying or comforting. What is being said without even a word?
