April: Wanderlust

I got a subscription to Travel and Leisure magazine at the height of Covid. Was it indulgent? Yes. Was it practical? Not at all. But did it fulfill something in me? Yes, it did. Like binging another season of Love is Blind or sinking your teeth in a novel whose writing is more than sub-par, yet you can’t seem to pull yourself away from it—Travel and Leisure magazine allowed me to escape, even just for a minute.

“Wish you were here?”  the caption read in big block letters across a landscape of the African Sahara. “Yes! Yes I do,” I thought to myself. At the time, the realities of heat, enormous insects, and less-than-comfortable sleeping arrangements didn’t cross my mind. I ignored the fact that I hate the stuffy, claustrophobic feeling I get on airplanes or the motion sickness that comes with any form of transportation. None of it mattered. All I could see were beautiful sunsets and a sky full of stars.

This month, we’re thinking about wanderlust. What places do you escape to when you let your mind wander? How does wandering show up in your very real life where you’re planted now? Where have you been that you can’t stop thinking about?
