July: Ordinary Inspiration

As I walk back toward home with my stroller in front of me and coffee in the cupholder, I can’t help but think about my week, about the ordinary nature of everything...
— Katie Blackburn, from the essay "Everything Ordinary"

Mary Oliver’s poem “The Summer Day,” takes a look at life and death and famously ends with these words: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do / With your one wild and precious life?” What is less known is that 8 lines in the middle of this poem are about a grasshopper—the way it eats and moves and flies away.

This month, pay close attention to something ordinary—the growth of one of your houseplants, the way your toddler holds a crayon, or the smell of bread breaking in the oven—and think about it. See if it has anything to teach you.

Then, tell us something you pulled away from this one very ordinary thing.
