April: Overheard at Home

At her final end of the year concert, I watched Evie scream the lyrics to “Are You UP…for the Challenge?” and nail all the hand motions and I laughed and marveled at my super strong girl who’s been asking me that question every morning since she was two.

Does anyone else marvel when their child learns a new phrase, or is it just me?

Lately, the conversations with my kids have revolved around new words. For instance, my 9-year-old stood in the middle of the kitchen, her cheeks red with indignation, about how her friends use the word “literally” when they mean “figuratively.” I literally didn’t know she knew how to use that word. Rant away, kid.

I discovered my 11-year-old learned the word “ostracized” when I gave him a lecture about calling a girl a mean name and how it would make her feel. Ironically, I stopped lecturing then. He learned how to apply it to that situation instantly.

Or better yet, when a 5-year-old figures out a malapropism in the best way. Just ask my son, who saw me rolling on the floor laughing after he yelled out, “Stop giving me sugar babies!”

These catchphrases, spoonerisms, or chunks of dialogue richly embellish our lives. Stories are told in so many words—and they aren’t even ours! This month, listen for melodies of dialogue in the cacophony of your everyday life. What questions do your children ask? What questions do you ask? Are there any exclamations and expletives you found interesting? Is there a word or phrase you keep hearing over and over again? Find stories that connect these words to your mothering journey. After all, there’s much to marvel in our everyday conversations.
